Students’ union officers have welcomed the suspension of further strike action by academic staff following a breakthrough in negotiations with national employers.

Members of Lancaster’s University and College Union (UCU) took part in 14 days of strike action last term as part of a national campaign of industrial action over proposed changes to the USS pension scheme.

It was announced on Friday that further strike action, planned for the summer term, has been suspended after union members voted to accept a new offer from Universities UK.

Our Full-Time Officer Team said: “We welcome the positive news that a way forward has been found in this dispute.

“As we have said throughout the industrial action, we sympathise with the position of the UCU and its members over proposed changes to their pensions, but did not wish to see students caught in the middle.

“This has been an unsettling and frustrating situation for Lancaster students and we hope that the progress that has been made will prevent further disruption to students’ studies as we enter the exam period.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and update our members on progress as further information becomes available.”
