Lancaster's innovative Community Fridge project - a student-led project to tackle food waste - was highly commended at a national sustainability awards ceremony this week.

The project received the accolade at the 14th edition of the prestigious Green Gown Awards Ceremony, held in York on November 8, where the project was nominated in the Campus Health Food & Drink category.

Students in Bowland College installed the Community Fridge with support from the students' union in the summer of 2017, and it can be used by anyone who wishes to donate food that would otherwise go to waste. Food can be claimed by anyone who wants to make use of it.

Former student Sam Allan, one of the project founders, said: "It is fantastic for the hard work of all volunteers who have been involved to be recognised at a national level.

"This award is a real vote of confidence for the future development of the fridge as we would like to install additional donation points around campus to increase engagement and reduce food waste further.”
