Union officers are due to meet with Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Atherton next week to discuss concerns over plans to extend Lancaster’s teaching day from next term.

It was revealed recently that the university plans to trial an extension to the teaching day that will mean classes could continue until 7pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursday and Fridays.

But union officers fear the decision could have wide-ranging negative impacts on students - including disabled students, those with caring responsibilities, part-time jobs and involvement in clubs and societies – and say they do not believe student concerns are being listened to by the university.

The students’ union has urged its members to write to their academic departments voicing their opposition, and called on the university to pursue other solutions such as livestreaming oversubscribed lectures or hiring temporary classrooms.

Durham University recently backed down on plans to extend its teaching day in the face of student objections.

Union Vice-President (Education) Ian Meeks said: “It’s clear from our meetings with university managers that there is a lack of regard for student opinion over this issue. There has been no meaningful student consultation over this and we hope that our meeting with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor will be the start of a more productive discussion on how Lancaster’s teaching space issues can be addressed.”
