The Students' Union Trustee Board met on Monday to agree proposals for reforms to the SU's democratic structures.

For several months the SU has been working with consultants Counterculture to conduct a review taking an in-depth look at its governance structures, including its Memorandum and Articles of Association and byelaws.

Trustees met on Monday to consider ideas generated by the review and agree the outline of a proposal for new democratic structures.
It was agreed that the proposed new union structures will include:

  • Majority elected Trustee Board
  • Formation of a directly-elected Union Council
  • New system for member-led campaigns
  • Adaption of the Vice-President Union Development role to include the Climate Emergency
  • New FTO Committee to more effectively execute the wishes of the membership

Proposals for new Articles of Association will be drafted and all students will have to opportunity to vote on whether to accept the proposals in a referendum in Lent Term.

Students' Union President Oliver Robinson said: "We're in the process of getting the changes drafted, and I can't wait to share the details with you further. I am particularly pleased with the subcommittee system for Council, which aims to ensure that everyone is included in our decision-making processes."

Further details of the referendum and how to vote will be published later in the term.
