A look back on Lent Term with your JCR Exec

Hey Bowland, we've had a really busy lent term and would like to wish you all a great Easter Break. As a JCR we have spent the term getting used to our roles and working with you guys to attempt to work as an effective JCR Exec. Our Events team has spent the term working on creating some key central events through the establishment of the Quiz and Film nights, and we are super excited for the events that they have got planned for next term. Our welfare team has also been working closely with you guys, planning some really successful events, a highlight being International Women's day 2018 which you can read more about here: https://lancastersu.co.uk/bowland/articles/why-is-feminism-important-to-bowland-college-iwd-2018. The rest of the exec have been working on big events behind the scenes, which we can't wait to share with you, including- Founders, Extrav and Welcome Week. We hope you enjoy your Easter Break, and we'll see you again when you return.

Word from the Vice-President:

Campus Elections Week: 07/03/18

On the 07-03-18 we were asked to vote for our Lancaster University Full Time Officers. After a week of hard campaigining by all candidates and a final voter turnout of 2754 people casting 13231 votes, the Full Time Officer team of 2018-2019 was decided, which you can read more about here: https://lancastersu.co.uk/articles/your-full-time-officers-2018-2019. As a college, we were asked to vote for a new Publicity Representative for the JCR Exec and you voted for Munirih Marie. Munirih has been working with the JCR Exec as the interim publicity officer and we are very pleased to continue working with her. Congratulations to all!

Extravs- What's all the fuss?

Extravs are the final week of celebrations that we have here at Lancaster University. Each College throws its own Extravs, and these are held over three days. Extravs are espeically cool because each has their own unique theme, so you will have plenty to choose from. Last years Extrav themes included: Bowland Party in the USA, Fyldechella, Countiki, Cartmel Great Gatsby and Londsdale Sphinxtrav etc. Students often come dressed up to the theme, and the costumes are big part of the fun, if you want an idea of the sort of cosutmes that people wear take a look at our 2016 The Lost Jungle of Bowland: https://www.facebook.com/pg/bowlandcollege/photos/?tab=album&album_id=10153724887481094,

Your questions- Answered

How do i get tickets? And can i get tickets for other colleges?

Tickets are released first to members of the college, so it is highly likely that you will be able to get a ticket for your own college. The remaining tickets are then put to general sale for all other colleges, so if a paticular theme is espeically popular- you have to be super quick in buying the tickets as they tend to sell out fast.

Do i have to go in costume?

No, you don't have to go in costume- people dress as much to theme as they feel most comfortable. However, most people do dress for theme.

When are the themes released?

The themes for all colleges are finalised now, and are kept secret until next term where they are all released on the same day. Colleges tend to post teasers when the release date is upcoming, so keep looking out for them.

When are Extravs held?

Extravs are held after exams are all finished, and are held towards the end of June.

How do i get involved?

If organising and planning a party for 1000 people sounds like your thing, then get involved with our Extrav Committee. It will likely be a great break from exam stress:

With one of the colleges' most anticipated events of the year, comes one of the best committee's that you could be a part of!

Making the most of Campus during the Easter Break

1. Get that warm fuzzy feeling from warm fuzzy chicks

Whether or not you are on campus, you can spend as long as you like gazing adoringly at the pre-school chicks thanks to their livestream. At the time of writing, most of the chicks had moved swiftly from the egg-cracking stage to energetic squabbling.

2. Get a step ahead on your revision.

With the Libray being a little quieter its a great way to get ahead on your studies.

3. Staying on campus for Easter? Meet up with other students

Come to Fylde Common Room on Wednesday 21st March between 1pm-2pm (drop-in) to meet other students who will be staying over the holidays too, and enjoy some free holiday treats. It’s also a great chance to make plans for the holidays.

4. Go to see some of the wonderful places, in and around lancaster.

Often with the business of term time there is no time to explore the places around Lancaster. I would highly recommed, Lancaster Castle, Williamson Park, Morcambe and, for those who may want to travel a little further, The Lake District.

5. Sample the Spring delights in town

Lancaster’s market square will be filled with local food and flower producers, music and craftspeople at the Lancaster Spring Market. Head to the city centre on Good Friday (30th March) from 10am.

6. Capture springtime and win a prize

The University Instagram Photo Competition has been running since the start of the academic year with each winner receiving a £20 Amazon voucher and a shot at the big annual prize. The theme for March is #springatLancaster

7. Get creative and decorate an egg

If you’re on campus, take a break from studying to socialise and decorate an egg in Fylde Common Room from 12-2pm on Tuesday 10th April. Prizes will be on offer.

Easter Revision Tips

1. Start Early

Starting your revision now can help you to be less stressed next term, when the exams will seem a lot closer. Starting early is the best way for your brain to retain information and process it in a way that your brain will remember! This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to have cracked all of your revision by the end of the Easter Break (although power to you if you can!) but if you have exams like me that begin towards the end of May, then getting a head start and planning your time accordingly will be the best way for you to understand just how much work you need to do in order to maximize your overall success.

2. Create a revision plan

Even if you are not going to start revision yet, it can be really helpful to start a revision plan. With a plan you will know how much you have left to do, so you will be able to manage your time much more effectivley.

3. Maintain or develop a healthy lifestyle.

Starting a balanced diet, and fixing that late-night sleeping pattern can be a great way to help your revision. If you are on top-health, then you will be better able to focus all your time on revision.

4. Utilise the Library whether you are at home or on campus:

If you are not on campus:

  • If you need a book over the vacation and it's already out on loan, you can request it in OneSearch. If you're not around to collect it, we can post it to you for a small charge.
  • If somebody requests a book you have on loan, you'll have 2 weeks in which to return it. You can post the book back if you're not coming to Lancaster. See our address and other contact details.
  • It's a good idea to return any books you've finished with before you go away.
  • If you need a book during the vacation, check on OneSearch to see if it's available as an e-book. Why not let us know of any titles that you need, and we can investigate whether we can purchase the e-book?
  • Did you know that you can use other university libraries over the vacation? The very useful SCONUL Access Scheme lets undergraduate students use other libraries for reference, and staff and postgraduates can borrow. IF

If you are on campus:

  • You can continue to study in the Library for most of the holidays, with the exception of Friday 30 March - Monday 2 April (inclusive). Check the Library website for full details of opening hours.
  • If you need a book which is already out on loan, you can request it in OneSearch.
  • If somebody requests a book which you have on loan, you'll have 2 weeks in which to return it.

5. Take a break

Make sure you use easter, and make time in that revision schedule to take a deserved break and enjoy your time at home.

The Bowland Magazine is also a way for students to share their own Uni blog work, if you are interested in getting your work in the blog, email: t.scott1@lancaster.ac.uk
