Wondering where to live in Lancaster? There are plenty of places to choose from. Whether you are a fan of the city life or you enjoy peaceful neighbourhoods, Lancaster is proud to offer you both. We have created a list with the most popular areas to live off-campus:

City Centre

Lancaster City Centre is a historic and vibrant area that caters for many Lancaster University students. There is plenty of choice of student accommodation in the city centre, meaning you are bound to find the perfect place for you and your friends. There are many frequent buses that can take you anywhere in Lancaster from Common Garden Street bus stop. The area is highly popular due to the number of things there is to do. It is unsurprisingly well-served with pubs, coffee shops and restaurants, so you will never run out of great places to eat and drink. The famous Market Gate Shopping Centre and VUE Cinema will also only be only a stroll away from your doorstep.

The City Centre is famous for its history and culture, so do not hesitate to visit Lancaster Castle and the City Museum. If you fancy live music, check Atkinsons Café. Feel like going out? LUSU’s Sugarhouse club is most likely a few minutes’ walk from your doorstep.

Bowerham

Bowerham is another popular area to live in Lancaster. It exclusively offers a combination of great bars, restaurants and convenience stores. The famous “Bowerham Hotel” pub draws students from all over the area to dine in a friendly atmosphere. The town is accessible both on foot or by bus, however, if you do not fancy going to town for shopping, Spar is conveniently located in the heart of Bowerham. There are plenty of take-away shops on your doorstep and a few locally-famous pubs nearby. One of the most popular pubs that Lancaster has to offer called “The Greaves Park” is only a short walk down the hill. Or if you do not feel like cooking, “Chester’s Chicken” or “Jasmine Gardens” take-away shops will be there for you.

The area is well-served with transport links, so you will never have to worry about not finding a quick and easy to route to the University campus. If you are the one who is seeking for beautiful, quiet and student-populated neighbourhood, Bowerham is exactly for you.

Primrose

Tucked between Bowerham and the City Centre, Primrose is another popular area where to students love to reside. This is a perfect location if you want to take a step back from the busy streets of Lancaster. You will enjoy picturesque strolls through the beautiful surroundings of one of Lancaster’s beauty spots – Williamson Park which will make you feel that you are miles away from urban city life. Primrose has an easy access to all the City Centre has to offer, but it is also home to “The Park” pub and an award winning “Hodgon’s” fish and chips shop as well. There is a Premier late-opening corner shop for your own convenience. The area is well-served by public transport links and it takes only 15 minutes to reach the University campus by bus.

Hope St.

Fairfield

Fairfield is situated on the edge of the City Centre, providing quiet yet central atmosphere in which to live. This is an increasingly popular choice for those who do not want to live in the City Centre, but would love to experience everything that Lancaster has to offer within arm’s reach. All the bars, shops and restaurants are approximately a 10-minute walk away from your doorstep. The area has excellent transport links to and from Lancaster University campus.

Freehold

Freehold, located near the historic Lancaster canal, is a highly desirable area among students. Local services include post office, a chemist and Gregson Community and Arts Centre. If you fancy picturesque walks, Lancaster Canal and the famous Williamson Park is only a short walk-away. The Market Gate Shopping Centre is within a walking distance.
