Classroom Assistant (Schools Volunteering)

Details Hide[-]

This opportunity offers Lancaster University school volunteers an opportunity to support teachers in the class room undertaking a number of tasks set down by the class lead. You will be fully supported by the class teacher and other teaching assistants and you will quite often work in small groups to ensure smooth running of tasks or projects.

All we need is for people who can effectively support and enthuse children & for people to act as positive role models and ambassadors for learning and the university.

Experience is not essential as the content is provided by project staff and training is provided. However, any volunteer with a background or part of a society wishing to have input into content and delivery will be made more than welcome to suggest this as we are always happy to work collaboratively with volunteers to aid in their development.

School visits take place regularly throughout the school year in primary, secondary and special schools. This provides practical experience for volunteers who may wish to go into educational roles and offers an insight into partnering with schools. Volunteers provide practical support and act as ambassadors for learning and Higher Education. Past volunteers have been able to build useful links with schools to further their career progression.

There is no minimum time commitment and volunteers can choose to participate in as many of the project areas outlined above as they wish. Committed and experienced volunteers may also have the opportunity to access some ad hoc paid work for the project later in the academic year.

The project has a Widening Participation focus, which means we aim to reach school students who may face barriers to accessing Higher Education such as disability (including Special Educational Needs), low family income or no parental history of university study. We are also keen to recruit and support students volunteers from Lancaster who fall within these categories; if you have any questions about this aspect of the project and whether you fall under 'Widening Participation' please get in touch.

There is an opportunity to help shape the delivery of this project so please come and help share your experience and passion for celebrating the diversity and multiculturalism within Lancaster.

*This opportunity is only available to currently Lancaster University Students
