The Friends of Greaves Park is a small group of volunteers who get together to make the park a welcoming place for people and a lovely natural space for wildlife. We have a community garden (including a wildflower meadow, a pollinator bed, fruit trees and other plants, trees and shrubs) which is being maintained primarily to increase the number of birds, bats, bees, butterflies and insects in the park. We also maintain the paths and open spaces throughout the park that date from its origin as the grounds of 2 large Victorian houses.
As well as regular volunteer sessions, currently held on the 3rd Saturday of each month, we occasionally meet to carry out specific projects where additional volunteers are very helpful (like clearing brambles, planting bulbs, cutting back overgrown trees and so on).
If you would like to join us for our monthly sessions, or help with a one-off project in the park, we would love to see you.
Depending on the time of year, we do lots of different jobs in the park. Our main focus is the Community Garden which we are reclaiming from an overgrown and neglected space. Jobs you could do include weeding, clearing invasive plants, maintaining paths, and generally improving the park for visitors and wildlife. Later in the year we hope to plant a hedge and some spring bulbs. We will provide tools, gloves etc.
NB THE NEXT REGULAR SATURDAY SESSION IS 13TH OCTOBER FROM 2-4 PM. THE ONE AFTER THAT WILL BE 17TH NOVEMBER.
