Islay Grant

The Vice-President (Campaigns & Communications) is responsible for supporting the work of media organisations associated or affiliated with the union and leading on campaigns. Also responsible for alumni relations.

Hi, I'm Islay and I'm the VP Campaigns and Communications for this year. I'm originally from Chichester, in the South of England, but this will be my fourth year living in Lancaster. I've just finished studying marketing and in my spare time I enjoy photography, cooking, rowing, playing pool and travelling. Before becoming a FTO I was the Communications Officer on the Fylde JCR and have had exec roles on the Marketing and Advertising societies.

My three main aims for the year are:

  • • Carry out a cooking campaign called Bite Club that aims to build students’ confidence in the kitchen and encourage you all to get cooking! I’m hoping that through this you’ll start to see cooking and eating as a fun social activity, and not just another chore that’s a part of your day. I will be running cooking workshops, demonstrations, giving out meal packs and there will be plenty of online content – so keep your eyes peeled!
  • • Run a year-long video campaign called How to Student, where I will release regular videos on a variety of topics, from how to find off-campus accommodation to how to make the most of your time at university and things you should know before starting university in Lancaster
  • • Run a social media conference targeted towards students that either just love using Instagram to stalk people, have a communications role on an exec or potentially want a career in online communications

Additionally, I will be working with our student media groups (LA1TV, SCAN, Bailrigg FM and Take2 Cinema) and the college JCR Communications Officers as their main link to the students’ union, and working alongside the other FTOs to support them on their campaigns.
