What is Pres Trip?
Pres (President’s) Trip is our second term weekend away, and will be on February 6th, 7th, 8th. It is usually our biggest trip away for the whole year which is suitable for everyone. It’s a mix of boating during the day and social in the evening. Everyone’s invited, no matter your experience (as long as you have done a deck/swim test). We’re going to a bunkhouse in Capel Curig, North Wales. It’s got bunk beds, an equipped kitchen, and living room, but don’t come expecting a 5 star hotel!
A general plan:
- Friday 6th: Travelling down in the afternoon/evening depending on when everyone in the car is free to go. Cars will be sorted in the preceding week. Drivers will likely stop at a services for food on the way down, but bring some snacks just in case, or prep a meal to have at the bunkhouse. Fun and games once everyone arrives.
- Saturday 7th: Boating*! We’ll run a whole club friendly trip. If time and rain permits the sendy group will likely do something more extreme / stupid after. Back to the bunk house for a group meal (expect lots of beans) and more fun and games.
- Sunday 8th: Recovery from the night before, followed by boating*, followed by travel back to Lancs (expect another services Maccies).
*Boating depends on the weather. The aim is to do a club level trip, but if water levels are not suitable not everyone will be permitted to paddle. Decisions about who can paddle are made by the safety committee. Being early February it might also be very cold and may be more sensible to go hiking. So bring some walking boots and something warm for going up a hill. Please don’t go overboard on packing though, car space will be limited!
*Boating is also dependent on being in a suitable state to paddle. We want everyone to have lots of fun, but if the safety committee deem that you are not in a suitable state to paddle (i.e. still drunk or too hungover), then you will not be permitted to paddle.
What it costs:
- Bunkhouse accommodation for two nights. The cost of this will be finalised after we know how many are coming. Expect between £25 - £30. If more than 20 people sign up (the number of beds in the bunkhouse), then some people will need to sleep on the floor (or in their cars if they want). Bed space will be given to leaders and drivers as a priority.
- Group meal - your share of the cost of copious amounts of beans. Probs a couple quid.
- Fuel. Expect between £35 - £45.
- Depending on river levels, if nothing else is running we might take a trip to the Tryweryn which would cost an additional £8.50 per person.
- So why are we asking you to pay £25 now? Think of this as a deposit, so if you run away without paying the club doesn’t lose out as bad. Important: we won’t refund this. Valid reasons to not come (e.g. illness) is of course okay and we will refund you.
What to bring:
Please pack efficiently or you’ll have bags on your knees for the whole journey.
Sleeping bag - bunkhouse provides everything else (a roll mat may be needed if you don't get a bed), and has an equipped kitchen, no need to bring cooking stuff!
Snacks for breakfast and lunch.
Shoes suitable for walking (incase we go hiking instead of boating).
Standard kayaking stuff (shoes to get wet, layers that are warm when wet). If possible, bring spare layers for Sunday so that you don't have to wear wet clothes for day 2. I want to stress warm, it is February!
We can provide the usual kayak equipment.
Please sign up with plenty of notice and as always any questions just ask!
