Philsoc Discussion and Elections-Natural vs artificial beauty

This week we are having a friendly group discussion. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their knowledge of Philosophy and it's all free. Following this, at about 4:45, we will hopefully have the new exec elections. More about this at the bottom of this description.

Is there a difference between natural beauty and artificial beauty and if so does that matter? A sunset happens everyday but Avatar 2 will only be available in cinemas for a few months. Any old person can put mud on a wall but only a tree can turn orange in the Autumn and secrete its hair across the landscape.

Philosophers have pondered the true nature of aesthetic value for millenia. Can some things be objectively beautiful? Is beauty merely someone's subjective opinion of something? Could natural selection explain why we find certain things attractive? On that note, how does the value of something created by a truly creative individual compare to something that happened to arise from nature through no conscious effort at all (unless that is why it's so beautiful(!))?
Some or all or none of these things will be discussed at the meeting, getting us all in the mood for some cordial elections.

There are 5 positions on the exec and you can get in touch with us through Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/2209282175/) or via email to find out more about them if you wish. You will have to say a little about why you think you would be right for the position and then the position shall be decided by majority vote while candidates are out of the room.
Here are descriptions of the roles as written by a founding member last year.
President: oversees all the society and is main interaction point with LUSU, also defacto health and safety officer.
General Secretary: writes minutes and helps organise society through coordinating members.
Treasurer: looks after finances and costs of events and trips.
Publicity officer: sorts out the flyers and posters if needs arise and also oversees the Facebook page and events, basically all publcity.
Social Secretary: in charge of organising socials and welfare of society members.
