Beginner's Navigation Day Course
We are running a beginners navigation course with 2 professional instructors! This is an excellent opportunity to learn how to navigate in the mountains, using a map and compass - a skill that will make you safer and that opens up possibilities for exploring! The course will be held in Bowness.
Meet at the Hitchhiker’s post at 08.20 am on Saturday the 16th of October. It is important you meet on time as we are meeting the instructors at a set time in the Lakes. If you don’t know where the Hitchhiker’s post is please read our FAQ on the website.
After you have bought this ticket you MUST fill out this booking form, as it is required by the company running the course.
This course will run even in the pouring rain so please make sure you have enough clothes to keep you warm and dry. You will be outside all day.
BRING:
- Enough clothes to keep you warm and dry. Check the weather forecast! Jeans are not suitable.
- Waterproof clothing (Jacket and trousers)
- Rucksack with a waterproof liner (a plastic bag is fine)
- Walking boots
- Lunch and drink. A hot drink like tea or coffee is recommended if the weather is cold, and quick snacks like nuts, chocolate bars, sweets, dried fruit etc are good to keep you energised through the whole day.
- Pen and paper
- Digital watch with a stopwatch, or a stopwatch (mobile phones are not suitable)
- Glasses and/or magnifying glass if you will need them to read very fine detail on the map
Please bring the following kit if you have it, if you don't you can borrow it:
- Head torch
- Compass
- Ordnance Survey map 1:25,000 Explorer OL7 The English Lakes South Eastern area & Map case
If you don’t have all of the kit you need please contact the exec ASAP and you might be able to borrow stuff.
The day should finish around 4 pm, so you will probably be back in Lancs around 5 pm.
We encourage everyone to register for the 999 text service before heading into the hills. In order to do this text 'Register' to 999.
