Dales/Lancs/Lakes Daytrip 29.1

Tickets go live at 6PM on the 25th

So we'll be running a daytrip next Sunday (the 29th). We're keeping it quite open-ended to keep our options open depending on the weather on the day, but it will hopefully involve trad climbing, sport climbing, bouldering or scrambling, either in the Lakes or Yorkshire (or just Lancs) . Some of the possible options are outlined below; we'll send out an update on saturday evening; keep an eye out as there may be different groups doing different things (much like the last trip). This trip is open to all abilities, although you'll probably have an easier time if you've climbed indoors before.

This trip will leave campus early to make the most of the limited daylight available at this time of year; we'll depart at 8.30AM from the welcome centre. We'd appreciate you being a bit early as we can sort out everybody's plans for the day beforehand.

We've priced these tickets in line with the fuel needed to reach some of the sligthly further afield crags (such as carrock fell); if we end up climbing locally, we'll refund the excess cost.

We're aiming to make the most of the day regardless of the weather; we won't cancel if its a bit rainy (although if its totally miserable, we'll cancel the night before and refund your tickets). As such, you'll need to bring clothes for cold and/or wet weather. If you don't have any of the following, say so on the form and we'll try and sort you out:

  • Waterproof coat and trousers (very important)
  • Lots of warm layers (pack spares!)
  • Hat & Gloves
  • Approach shoes / Boots
  • Headtorch
  • Food & water; pack a flask for a hot drink if you have one.
  • Rucksack to pack it all in.

So some possible options for the day:
Please be aware that none of these options have any facilities at the crag, though some have toilets at the carpark (wild wees it is!).

Long Scar, Scout crags, Wallowbarrow (Lakes Trad)
These are examples of some of the Lakes-based trad crags we may end up at, should it be dry-ish and not too cold; the latter two will be better options if its windy. All have relatively amendable walk-ins, generally ~20 mins and usually uphill, and climbs across a spread of grades, mostly at the easier end of things (we're assuming we won't get pristine weather). We may also head to one of the many other langdale crags.

Runestone Quarry (Lakes Sport)
Slate dries pretty quickly and should be sheltered; this will be a good option if its a bit drizzly and not too cold. This crag (amongst other slate quarries in the area) has a wide spread of grades and options for all abilities. The walk in is ~30 mins on good tracks, flat-ish.

CopperminesCarrock Fell (Lakes Bouldering)
Bouldering will probably be the best option if its forecast to be cold or windy, but mostly dry. These two venues are at opposite ends of the lakes so will likely get different weather too.

Pinnacle Ridge (Lakes Scrambling)
Our best option if its wet everywhere (but not grim enough to cancel!); we can still have a cool adventure. There's a variety of options from hill-walking upwards, up to very easy climbs. In poor conditions, we'd be likely to treat what would normally be considered scrambles as easy climbs to keep things safe; wet rock is slippy afer all! There's lots of options from Patterdale (including going to the cafe!), such as Striding edge, Pinnacle Ridge etc. A day like this would include plenty of walking.

Twistleton (Yorkshire)
If its properly grim in the lakes, but not here. We've a variety of options from Grit bouldering / trad (such as crookrise or rylestone to Limestone Sport or Trad (such as twistleton or giggleswick). We also have the option of local crags such as Windy or the silverdale lime.
