Lake District Trad Day Trip 31/5/25

We're gonna go climbing for a day in the Lakes. We'll choose a suitable crag for the day based on weather and abilities, currently thinking about Gimmer Crag or Gaitkins.

This day is open to total beginners to climbing, all we ask is that you be able to walk to the crag (up to an hour uphill) and are keen to climb! The days can be physical so a basic level of fitness is needed, but nothing extreme. Feel free to message James with any questions.

If you're new to trad climbing, you'll be paired with an experience trad leader and another competent person who'll be happy to show you the ropes.

We can provide nearly all the gear you'll need. There is an opportunity to let us know what you need on the form after buying a ticket.

The types of ticket are:

- Climber's ticket - open to total beginners, you are taken out by a competent pair for the day.

- Competent 2nd ticket - you must be able to confidently lead belay on half ropes, abseil safely, buddy check knots, remove gear, and coil ropes.

- Leaders ticket - for club leaders (you know who you are!)

- Drivers ticket - reserved especially for you, only buy it if you are named on the ticket please!

The weather in the Lake District is VERY changeable so please still adhere to this kit list despite the recent lovely weather!!

You'll need to bring or borrow:

  • Waterproof Coat and Trousers (it may be wet!)
  • Hiking Boots or Approach shoes
  • Plenty of warm outdoorsy layers (not jeans); spare layers a good idea.
  • Hat & Gloves
  • Headtorch (+ batteries!)
  • Water Bottle (2L+)
  • Any climbing gear you own (ie. Shoes, Harness, Helmet etc.); see the ticket form.
  • Rucksack to carry your kit to the crag.
  • lunch and snacks for the day

Please do ask us if you need to borrow anything, we can probably lend it to you!

We aim to be an accessible and inclusive society, so do let us know if you have any needs that we could resonably accommodate - we do want to take as many people as possible climbing!! There are no toilets at the crag, but information and help is available to deal with this - don't be afraid to ask.
