Thirlmere Weekend Away (21st - 23rd Oct)

This is our first weekend trip away of the term, to Thirlmere village hall in the Lake District, home to some of the better rock climbing in the UK. We'll leave lancaster on the friday evening (with cars leaving at a variety of times to suit people's timetables), for two days in the Lakes before a return to campus on Sunday evening. Further information will be emailed to you.

Unfortunately, the village hall have continued to reduce their overnight capacity so this trip will be a very small one; we expect tickets to sell out quickly. As such, we're organising a larger trip to the Peak District and the Heathy Lea Oread MC hut near Chatsworth, for the 11th - 13th of November (more info will follow). Tickets for thirlmere go live here at Midday on Saturday the 15th Oct.

We understand that attending these sort of trips can be an intimidating affair, and as such we strongly advise thay you come along to an informal pre-trip meeting on Wednesday the 19th (on campus somewhere, time and venue TBA). This will enable you to meet who you'll be climbing with, maybe learn a bits and bobs and allow us to make some rough plans for the weekend.

You'll need to bring or borrow:

  • Waterproof Coat and Trousers (expect it to be wet!)
  • Plenty of warm outdoorsy layers (not jeans)
  • Hat & Gloves
  • Hiking Boots or Approach shoes
  • Headtorch (+ batteries!)
  • Water Bottle & a Flask if you have one
  • Toiletries, towel etc.
  • Sleeping bag & mat

If you don't have access to any of these items, speak to us at the pre-trip meeting and we'll sort you out. At this time of year, heading into the hills ill-equipped is a spectaularly bad idea and can end badly, so if you come onto the trip without having organised to borrow something you need, we'll have to leave you in the hut for the day.

Food is provided for the weekend, with a variety of breakfast and lunch materials, and veggie/vegan chilli and curry for the Friday and Saturday evening meals. That said, you may wish to bring a selection of your favourite snacks, along with a sandwich box to put it all in. If you've any allergies or other dietary requirements please indicate as such when you buy a ticket.

On that note, we aim to be an accessible and inclusive society, so please, please, please tell us about your needs so we can help support you and enable you to make the most of the weekend. For most of the crags we plan on viisting over the weekend, it will take at least 15 minutes of uphill walking on uneven ground, and there will be no toilet facilities. Some of the more remote mountain crags may take an hour plus to reach, but we'll tailor where you end up to your psych and experience level. As we're staying in a village hall, the sleeping space is open and communal, but there is a small side room that we will designate as a quiet space for those of you that need a little more privacy, or peace and quiet.

“The BMC recognises that climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.”
