Hedgehog Friendly Campus

About

Hedgehog Friendly Campus is a nationwide scheme for schools and universities to get involved in the conservation of one of the UK’s most beloved animals. It is important to protect hedgehogs not just because they are very cute and unique animals but also due to them being great indicators of the decline in our natural world. In 2020 hedgehogs were declared vulnerable to extinction and placed on the UK Red list. Some of the key factors relate to roads and cars, loss of habitat and harmful agricultural practices. All is not lost though, thanks to schemes like this the urban hedgehog has seen populations stabilise and with more community action we may be able to create a brighter future for our spiky friends.

Here at Lancaster, we have our own student-interest group that works hard to boost the biodiversity of our campus. You may not know it but Lancaster University has a large population of Hedgehogs as well as many other interesting species of mammals such as foxes, bats and stoats. As part of the scheme, we run wildlife surveys around the campus getting tracks and videos of a wide range of animals.

We do a variety of fun social activities such as quizzes, walks, arts and crafts and much more. Since this is an official voluntary scheme, participation can be put on your CV and references are given out by the parent organisation.

Each year, the university is given an award based on all we have achieved. Currently we have a silver rating but are aiming to achieve gold in 2022 and platinum the year after!
