Other routes into student leadership

Nominating yourself in our Students’ Union elections is not the only way to take-on a leadership position in the Students’ Union. We have over 2000 student leaders across our Student Academic Representatives, societies, sports clubs, College JCRs, Liberation and Campaigns Forums, and a whole range of other opportunities and student networks.

Student Academic Reps: if you want to represent your peers and work to make positive change for students in the University, you can put yourself forward to be a Student Academic Representative. If you are interested, speak to your lecturer or email us on reps@lancaster.ac.uk.

Societies & Sports Clubs: each of our many societies and sports clubs has an executive committee who run the society or club. Each year, around the end of Lent Term and the start of Summer Term, each society and sports club runs informal elections for their executive. Each group run their elections in a way, and at a time, that works for them. If you are a member of a society or sports club, speak to your executive about upcoming elections and vacancies on their executive.

College JCR Co-options: outside of their main elections in Michaelmas Term, some posts on College Junior Common Room (JCR) executive committees become available. To fill these posts, JCRs seek to co-opt enthusiastic students in posts. If you are interested in getting involved in your JCR executive, speak to your current executive.

Liberation & Campaigns Forums: many of our forums are run in a similar manner to our societies and spots clubs, with an organising executive elected each year by forum members. If you are interested in getting involved in helping to run one of our forums speak to relevant Liberation & Campaigns Officer or other members of the forum executive.

Other opportunities: throughout the year, and across the organisation, the Students’ Union offer additional opportunities for you to get involved and develop your skills. These could be by taking up a position on Union Assembly, helping us with Roses or Extravs, or getting more involved in our work developing the curriculum with the University.

Keep an eye on our socials and our website for news of upcoming opportunities. Of you already hold a leadership position, make sure you stay up-to-date with the latest news via our newsletters and other communications; we’ll send you opportunities to get more involved throughout the year.
