Sustainable Events Guide

Here's our handy Sustainable Events Guide to help you plan and host events with sustainability in mind!

🗓️ Events & Meetings

  • Encourage bringing your own cups, containers, and utensils at gatherings rather than single use.
  • Choose plant-based catering options.
  • Think carbon before travelling – is the venue accessible by walking, cycling, or public transit – this may be cheaper too!
  • Use recycling bins and dispose of waste properly: recycling on campus.
  • Check out the Sustainable Events Checklist.

🔧 Operations

  • Create a sustainability officer role or committee.
  • Maintain a sustainability policy or checklist. Track and report your carbon footprint or waste diversion where possible.
  • Consider carbon offsets for major events or travel.

🎉 Merch & Materials

  • Buy less, reuse more – can you get what you need second hand?
  • Opt for certified organic, recycled, or upcycled materials.
  • Make merch pre-order only to avoid surplus.
  • Avoid putting dates on merch, so it can be used for many years.
  • Donate items - Don't Ditch It - Lancaster University

💼 Collaborations & Partners

  • Partner with student environmental groups for ideas or co-events. Find Sustainability Societies here.
  • Support or fundraise for local eco-charities or social causes. Find Local Charities here.
  • Got a themed social? Use the LUSU Swap and Style for free costumes rather than buying new.
  • Looking for a sober social? Volunteer with LUSU Green, we run volunteering opportunities on and off campus from wildflower planting to reforestation!

📢 Communications

  • Use digital posters, social media, and mailing lists. Highlight sustainability in event promotions.
  • Share eco-tips, green wins, or member spotlights.
  • If running a Green Event, tag 'sustainability' on Union Cloud.
