The JCR Awards & Elections Night kicked off LUSU’s December and marked the final month of many of our JCR officers. It was incredibly well-attended, with representatives from every college gathering at The Sugarhouse in full spirit.

Since joining the University as part of the 2021 cohort, I have never seen such a heightened sense of college spirit. The frequency and diversity of events that the JCRs are delivering for their colleges is amazing and their dedication to making Lancaster’s campus as inclusive, fun, and lively as possible is so refreshing.

The first part of the night saw the most exceptional of officers, initiatives and execs be awarded for their unparalleled dedication.

Award Winners:

  • JCR Executive of the Year Award: Furness College JCR Executive.
  • JCR Officer of the Year Award: Pavan Bhamidipati.
  • JCR President of the Year Award: Owen Coppack.
  • Unsung Hero of the Year Award: Dylan Taylor.
  • Wellbeing Initiative of the Year Award: Luke Donlan & Fylde College JCR Executive.
  • Comms Presence of the Year Award: Hannah Cochrane & Charlotte Brindle.
  • Sporting Initiative of the Year: Jasmine Savill.
  • Charitable Activity of the Year Award: Fylde College KCR Executive & Furness College JCR Executive.
  • Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Award: Ella Smith.

The second part of the night saw the climax of a fantastic election season, that saw us achieve milestones like never before. 1944 students cast 14,210 votes, which is the highest numbers of voters and votes since COVID. These votes saw a whopping 93% of JCR & PG Board roles filled – this is the highest numbers we have seen since even years before COVID. In addition to the JCR elections, we saw a record number of candidates for NUS Delegates, with a collective number of over 160 students putting themselves forward for student leadership positions.

With the Trees for Votes scheme, we promised to plant a tree on university land for every 20 votes. And because of you, we’ll be planting 97.2 trees!

LUSU pitted the colleges against each other to see who could create the largest buzz around the elections, of which Furness College JCR Executive came out on top of with a whopping 23% of college members having their say. Cartmel clinched second with 15%, followed closely behind by County who saw 14% of their members casting a vote.

A quick analysis of the stats from this election season very quickly evidences how much effort our JCR officers have put in over 2023. So many people are wanting to either put themselves forward to volunteer for their college executive, or at the very least involve themselves in college goings-on. It is clear that college spirit is being revitalised before our eyes and these JCR Officers should be immensely proud that they are pioneers of such integral, lively communities.
