Lancaster’s sports teams take on York when Roses 2018 comes to campus on the weekend of May 4-6.
And as the event approaches and our teams continue their intense preparations, we’ve published a new collection of images celebrating their hard work, passion and athleticism.
The War of the Roses between Lancaster and York is not only a historical one, but also a huge sporting tradition between the two universities.
Organised by the students’ unions at each university, the intervarsity competition first took place in 1965 and Roses has now been running for more than 50 years with the prestige of being named the biggest competition of its kind in Europe!
It’s Lancaster’s turn to host in 2018, which means we can all look forward to a fantastic weekend of sporting action and entertainment right here on campus.
With students competing in more than 50 different sports and 100 fixtures over one weekend, it’s going to be an amazing action-packed tournament and chance to share our pride in all things Lancaster.
Vice-President (Activities) Ben Francis said: “Currently York leads the tally with 27 wins to Lancaster’s 25, but we hope to close that gap with a big win on home soil. 2016 marked Lancaster’s biggest home victory for 20 years and we are hoping for an even bigger margin this May!”
Look out for more big Roses news coming soon, including an announcement about our 2018 promotional video, filmed with our athletes in January.
