The wide-ranging educational and informative programmes and resources delivered by the Children & Young People’s partnership have been designed to raise awareness, widen participation and provide useful insights about what higher education can offer after school but to deliver these projects relies heavily on student volunteers harnassing their enthusiasm and experience.
The projects that are typically delivered during a regular academic year are currently on hold but the CY&P team have found innovative and exciting ways to remain in touch with local education institutions whilst still providing opportunities for student volunteers to get involved.
CY&P student volunteers reached out to students in year 12/13 at Ulverston Victoria High School to share an insight into life at Lancaster, as well as what it is like to study Law and Psychology as an undergraduate.
Volunteers discussed a range of course-specific topics but also talked about campus, clubs & societies, accommodation, making new friends.
Psychology Student, Eliza George said: "It was nice to meet students and members of faculty from the school and I believe that the students had an insightful opportunity to know more about the course and university life in general. I hope the session was useful for the students as searching for courses and making decisions about the future can be a challenging task."
Head of Sixth Form at UVHS Rob Rastelli very much welcomed the offer from the Lancaster University Students’ Unions Children & Young People’s partnership to facilitate these interactive subject sessions over Teams. The year 12 students who attended fed back that the sessions had a positive atmosphere and that the Lancaster students spoke informatively and at a good easy to follow pace. UVHS students felt happy to interact with their own questions and overall they very much enjoyed the experience. We would very much welcome the opportunity for future collaboration with Lancaster in other areas.
Students' Union Opportunities Co-ordinator, Mark Gardner said: "With students and schools not being able to visit campus this year we’d thought we’d try and provide an interactive insight into life at Lancaster in key areas identified by our colleagues in schools and importantly, the young people going through A Levels."
