Last weekend Henry Moss came 4th in the 20-24 age group at the European Duathlon championship in Spain. The race consisted of a 10km run/ 40km cycle/ 5km run across a hilly, wet and incredibly windy course. He told us about his experience.
Duathlon is meant to keep Triathletes busy over winter, avoiding chilly waters by replacing the swim with another run. As a stronger cyclist/runner than swimmer, I decided that I would train specifically for these events and my performance in some key races last year meant that I was selected to represent the GB 20-24 age group team at the European championships.
The race itself started with a windy and hilly 10km around Soria park at about 1500m altitude, where some speedy Spaniards and a couple of Frenchmen pushed ahead. The cycle course was very technical and the hilly terrain and 40mph gusts mimicked Lancashire perfectly, allowing me to feel at home and cycle through the field into 3rd place. Unfortunately I badly cramped up in the final run, losing third position and recording my slowest ever 5km run in the process.
This was my first international race and my 4th position gave me automatic selection for the team for next year's championships.
Henry says, “It will be my last chance in the 20-24 age category and I have a lot to learn from this year's race. I aim to make it on the podium this time!”
Thanks for Graduate college for providing me with some assistance to be able to get out to Soria and represent Lancaster and GB.
