This year’s Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on Sunday January 27 and throughout the past week a number of events have taken place around Lancaster in remembrance of those killed during the Holocaust and in the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Dafur.

On Thursday 24 January members of our officer team paid their respects by attending a Holocaust Memorial Day candle-lighting service - in the Garden of Remembrance at Lancaster Town Hall. This was followed by performances and reflections from speakers including Cat Smith MP which linked back to this year’s theme of ‘Torn from Home’.

Lancaster University Jewish Society hosted Holocaust survivor, Lady Milina Grenfell-Baines MBE on January 23 who spoke to students about her experiences during the Second World War. A video of this talk for anybody who would like to listen can be found here.

The final event organised for this week is an inter-faith service of music, prayer and reflection which will be held at the Lancaster Priory on Sunday January 27 at 6.30pm and is open to all who wish to attend.

Last year students’ union Vice President (Welfare & Community) travelled to the Auschwitz concentration camp as part of a project created to ensure the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten. To read her reflections following this visit click here.
