It’s Voting Time: But Why Should You Vote?

Wednesday 05-03-2025 - 09:41

Voting is open and it’s time to decide which candidates are going to be your 2025/26 Full-Time Officers (FTOs).

VOTE NOW!

On Tuesday 4th March, voting opened in this year’s LUSU elections. So, now is your chance to make your mark and decide who you want to be the next FTO team at LUSU. Voting closes Thursday 6th March – there’s still time!

But the big question that might be on your mind… why should you vote?

The chance to have your say

Elections are one of the biggest ways to have your voice heard, and what you say matters. So, if there’s something you don’t like, or something you want to see changed… vote! There might be candidates that agree with you – check out this year’s manifestos here.

Valuing student opinions

We value every single student’s opinion – yup, that includes you. Whatever it is, we want to hear it. Voting means that we get to hear from as many of you as we possibly can and gives us insight into the change you want to see from us, your union.

Change that matters

Throughout the year, FTOs run and aid the running of campaigns on multiple different subjects. They also lobby the University and speak with senior members at meetings to make change happen. So, if there’s a nominee that wants to campaign for something that matters to you, why not give them your vote? This is your time to put a stamp on Lancaster’s history for not just you, but also future students to come.

Trees 4 Votes

Did you know that for every 20 votes in our elections, we plant 1 tree on university land? You’re not just making change for you, but the environment too! We’ve already begun planting some of the 329 trees from last year’s election periods. You can check it out below.

Represent students democratically

FTOs represent the student body here at Lancaster University. So, whether you vote or not, the FTOs elected will represent you at a senior level in the university. Take the time to think carefully and choose who you want to have that responsibility.

It’s easy!

Like, super easy. All you have to do is click the link in your fast-track voting email and follow the instructions on your screen. Or you can simply go to www.lancastersu.co.uk/vote to cast your vote.

You don’t even need to get out of bed!

Want to hear it from someone who's not us? Take it from students!

'I think it’s really important to vote because as a student you want to vote for who is in charge of all the fun things at University... I’ve already voted, so you guys should too! All the candidates have got very unique selling points and you should read their manifestos... they’re all trying to do good things for the students... They are students for the students, so as a student, you should vote. Also, for every 20 votes, [LUSU] will plant a tree so that’s really really good for the environment.' - Anonymous Student

'I think it’s important for postgraduates to get involved and to vote because they need to be invested in what's happening for them. We often think that we don’t have a say in LUSU, but LUSU is actually there in loads of different ways to help and support, especially when it comes to education issues. So, please go out and vote and actually have a say on the future of, not only your Union, but what’s happening for the University. Especially with the curriculum transformation coming up, this is our chance to have our voice heard, and to get the best student experience possible.' - Anonymous Student

'I’m a final year student, and usually as final year students you think like “well it doesn’t really matter what you vote for”  it’s not going to really affect you. But I think... you will still be tied to the University after you leave, and you want that university to have a good culture where people will be able to see it... even in the future as a University that’s for students and run by students... The Students’ Union does have a lot of impact on student life at Lancaster... I think it is important to sort of like have your voice heard, otherwise you kind of feel like, well if you haven’t voted then... kind of be a bit of a hypocrite if you kind of complain about it in a sense? And I think it just like goes for politics in general anyway...' - Anonymous Student

Remember, voting closes Thursday 6th March at 6PM – so what are you waiting for? Get voting!
