We're marking Black History Month with a series of events throughout October focused on raising understanding the black British experience and identity.
Now running for more than 30 years in the UK, Black History Month celebrates black history, arts and culture and we have a huge programme of activity planned on campus throughout the month. Everyone is welcome to get involved!
We'll officially launch Black History Month on campus with a ceremonial raising of the Black Liberation Flag on the university flag pole at 11am on Tuesday October 1.
The union's Internationalisation and Community Team is proud to have worked with student groups and community partners on a series of events from public debates and workshops to social activities, campaigns and more.
Throughout October the university Library is dedicating space and running activities focused on diversifying reading collections and raise appreciation of the wide range of texts and resources already availalble.
BME Students' Officer Chris Ebulu said: "This month should not only be a celebration of the achievements of black people in the UK, but also a much-needed opportunity for all of us to develop our understanding of the black British experience and identity.
"This isn't simply about black history or black people; we are trying to understand British history through certain perspectives. Therefore, it is imperative that the campaigns have a long-term impact and students start to understand that the historical narrative of black communities (and especially the black British community) belong in the predominantly white and male grand narrative of British history."
