Lancaster University Swimming and Water polo team (LUSWP) hosted the University Challenge Trophy on Saturday with local teams, raising money for RNLI.

The charity gala which is targeted at young swimmers ages 15+ with clubs from the North West taking part, Lancaster City Swimming and Water Polo, Preston Swimming Club (LUSWP's local partner club) and Winsford Swimming Club.

LUSWP organised the day to be like a University Open Day but specifically for swimmers. The event gave the club swimmers a taste of competing at University level in a BUCS format as well as the opportunity to take a tour of Lancaster University Campus and the sports centre, meet potential future team mates and coaches. It is hoped that many of these young, talented swimmers will come to Lancaster University in the next few years.

As well as bringing teams together and forging relationships between LUSWP and clubs the event raised over £250 for Royal National Lifeboat Institution.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  

Lawrence Copeman, Treasurer for LUSWP hopes the event will encourage young swimmers to look to higher education, “University swimming presents a very different challenge to club swimming, over unique competition calendar whereby a very close bond is forged with your teammates. 

It is likely that within the next 1-4 years, they will be considering their University options, which we hope will include Lancaster University.”

LUSWP hope to have similar events in the near future and the possibility of a Water Polo Tournament. You can see photos from Saturday’s gala here.
