Green Lancaster's Schools Go Green project is once again in full swing.
The Schools Go Green project aims to teach young people about the environment and sustainability through hands-on workshops at the University. The kids get to check out Green Lancaster's EcoHub, meet the Lancaster ladies (our rescue hens) and EcoHive bees. They also get to see how their food is grown and consider how far some of their favourite meals have travelled before reaching their plate.
Emma Pearce our Go Green Co-ordinator said: "It makes kids consider where the food and plastic that they use comes from whilst giving them a fun day out."
The LUWRUFC said: "It was a great experience for the LUWRUFC to engage with students on healthy and eco-friendly living. We especially loved talking to them about sport, health and their goals for when they're older!"
As part of the day, the girls got stuck in and helped the kids make a Pesto Pasta dish!
No pre-made sauce jars here, the kids had to combine the basil, garlic, lemon and parmesan with a pestle and mortar - with a little help from their friends at LUWRUFC - and add it to the fresh al dente pasta.
For many of them, this was their first experience of cooking, opportunity to consider sustainability and see first hand the journey from ground to plate.
Projects such as this provide invaluable insights to those who may otherwise miss out. The Go Green project will continue throughout the summer and we look forward welcoming many more Primary schools to campus!
