This week we celebrated all of our sports teams achievements at our annual Sports Awards!
Presented by the outgoing VP Activities Toby, the awards included Outstanding Contribution to Sport, Team of the Year, Club of the Year and the Carter Shield, which was awarded to the overall winners following Inter-Collage competitions.
The Carter Shield was a new addition to the awards calculated by grouping all of the college leagues together. This meant that alongside the one-day Carter Shield events, each team was contributing to an overall Inter-College sporting competition to determine the ultimate Sports College.
The first to win the shield was...
The Team of the Year Award was a closely fought battle, with so many teams delivering incredible performances. Nominees included the undefeated Women's Badminton team, the hugely successful Women's Pool team, league smashing Men's Futsal team and our Men's Handball competitors who placed 3rd nationally and scooped up the Team of the Year Award!
The Club of the Year Award recognises those who have shown the best performance on the pitch and dedication to the sport off it. Three teams were nominated included Women's Rugby Union, Women's Hockey and Men's Basketball. Women's Hockey only narrowly missed out on promotion to 1A this year and hosted a hugely successful indoor hockey tournament. Further still, the squad worked tirelessly towards widening participation and opened up hockey to the wider campus. Men's Basketball reached new heights on the pitch and ran a recreational basketball league for two terms, volunteering their time to give all students the chance to play basketball regularly. While Women's Rugby Union has had a solid season, grown their membership, worked with local primary schools and has consequently run away with the Club of the Year Award.
The Vice-Presidents' Award goes to those who have had an incredibly exciting year. Thoroughly deserving of this award were the Men's Futsal team, who not only won their BUCS league but also smashed it at Roses, bringing home the win against a York team who compete in the league above!
The VP Activities said: "It was one of my personal highlights from Roses weekend to sit and watch their nail-biting tie which I think put them on the map as one of Lancaster’s most exciting sports teams to watch."
...And we couldn't agree more!
The final award was the Angie Park Award for Outstanding Contribution to Sport. This award is presented to an individual who has gone above and beyond for sport at Lancaster in the past year. This year’s winner is somebody who has been a driving a force behind the exceptional development of the women’s hockey club.
The sports staff at the students’ union have found it a pleasure and a privilege to have interacted and worked with her all year and were proud to thank her for all of her hard work by presenting the award to Lizzie Bevan.
