The results from SU Sports' student consultation highlighted that high membership costs were impacting sports participation. However, the Sports Team helped to reduce the price of the Sport Lancaster Membership for the 2022-2023 season so that students could save money and not feel the like they have to neglect sports.
Every penny counts at the moment, and even though the overall Sports Review Implementation is on hold until next year, following this fantastic news we are expecting more great things from the SU Sports Team very soon!
Do I need Sport Lancaster Membership?
If you a member of a society or a college sport team you do not need the Sport Lancaster Membership. If you are a member of a Sport Lancaster Club you will need to buy your club membership (which is set by your club exec) as well as a Sport Lancaster Membership. There are however a few exceptions for the Sport Lancaster Membership due to the variety of memberships some clubs offer. You will only need a Sport Lancaster Membership if you have a club membership which gives you access to on campus competitive training and selection for BUCS competition.
For example, the Women's Basketball Club only offer a competitive membership due to limited training space so all Women's Basketball Club members also need a Sport Lancaster Membership. However the Hockey Club offer a competitive membership and a recreational one and only the competitive members pay the additional Sport Lancaster Membership as only they access the resources associated with it.
If in doubt please check with the exec of your club as failure for all competitive members to pay the Sport Lancaster Membership will put your club at risk of suspension.
How much is a Sport Lancaster Membership and what does it cover?
For the 2022-23 season, the Sport Lancaster Membership is £65 and includes the following:
*Mode of transport provided will be the most cost effective
**This is only for clubs who the University can provide on campus facilities for. If your club do not use University facilities the Union will have agreed set terms and conditions for funding towards your facility and/or transport costs
How do I purchase my Sport Lancaster Membership?
If you have not purchased a University gym membership simply head to the sports centre and ask to purchase a Sport Lancaster Membership. If you have purchased a University gym membership please see the question below.
Failure to purchase a Sport Lancaster Membership will not only prevent you from gaining access to the Sports Centre for your club training and matches, but it will also put your club at risk of suspension.
I’ve already purchased a gym membership at the University Sports Centre, do I have to pay another £65 for a Sport Lancaster Membership.
Great news, no you don't! If you have already purchased a University gym membership you simply need to tell the Sports Centre reception staff that you are also a member of a Sport Lancaster Club and they will sort this for you. Similarly if you purchase a Sport Lancaster Membership first and want to 'top-up' to a gym membership you just need to pay the difference.
I have joined a Sport Lancaster Club but I’m really struggling financially. Is there any support for anyone who cannot afford a Sport Lancaster Membership or face additional financial barriers to participate?
Absolutely! We never want cost to be a financial barrier to participation in sport and therefore work really hard to ensure that sport is as sustainable as possible but also accessible to everyone. However if the membership is a financial barrier to you, or you require additional financial support to compete in a Sport Lancaster Club, you can apply for funding from the Sport Lancaster Access Fund. Alternatively, if you are facing financial hardship outside of just membership costs for sport make sure you have checked out all the options available to support you here at Lancaster. These can be found here:
