Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims, who fast (abstain from any food and drink) from dawn to dusk and engage in spiritual activities such as additional prayer, charity and self-reflection.
This Wednesday 19th March, Lancaster Islamic Society (ISOC), International Students' Forum and LUSU would like to invite you to a special Open Iftar (meal to end the fast each evening) event. All are welcome, regardless of your faith background, to learn more about this practice over a meal provided by ISOC, LUSU and many other generous partners.
This is an opportunity for those from outside the Muslim community of all faiths and none to come along to learn about the significance of fasting during Ramadan, and to experience for themselves the joy of breaking that fast in the context of community. The event will comprise of a welcome, an explanation of the history and significance of Ramadan, followed by the public reciting of some key verses of the Quran by members of ISOC who will explain the significance of the verses. The Muslims present will then offer a short prayer which those not part of the faith are invited to observe, and then the fast will be broken by the traditional serving of dates and water followed by a shared meal. This event is completely free and all who wish to learn more about Ramadan and experience first hand the Muslim faith are invited to attend. Please note that non-Muslims will not be expected to participate in the prayers or acts of religious devotion.
This event will be hosted in the Great Hall with the stage visible to all seated, but there will be dividing partition walls down the middle of the hall to separate male and female guests for the duration of the event, in keeping with Muslim customs. We hope to cater for as many guests as possible, however portions may be prioritised for those observing the fast.
If you wish to donate towards the provision of food for Iftar throughout Ramadan and this event, you can do so at the Islamic Society's GoFundMe page here.
The event will close at around 8pm.
