The Lancaster University Comedy Institute (LUCI)!

Welcome!!!

If you enjoy comedy, you're in the right place! Here at LUCI, we offer you the opportunity to perform, write, watch and critique comedy! We do so many things throughout the year that it is practically impossible to not find something you like. We accept anyone with a passion for comedy, even if you've never seen any comedy before! Most who join LUCI are amateurs so don't let a lack of experience put you off! Anyone is welcome to our meetings and socials, even if you just want to watch!

Our Social Media:

Here are some links to our social media. You can take a peek at our YouTube to see some of our shows or check out our Instagram and Facebook. We're most active on Instagram so if you are considering joining or have any questions, drop us a message and an exec member will answer it as soon as they can!

What We Do:

Wow! That's 5 whole tabs of society content! And this doesn't include our frequent socials, impromptu meetups and post-meeting bar seshs! Don't worry, we don't expect anyone to take part in every society event - we cater for as many different types of comedy as possible, so if something is not for you, that's fine!

Standup

Our most popular output, Standup Comedy is a cornerstone of LUCI. To help our members work on our standup, we have two Standup Meetings each week, on Mondays and Wednesdays in BNSR(TBC), from 6-8 PM. Here, members can bring stuff they have been working on, perform it in a safe, enthusiastic environment and receive feedback from other members on how to make their sets shine!

We endeavour as a society to be as positive and supportive as possible, especially to those who are new standup, as many of our members are! A set can be workshopped many times at a Standup Meeting without judgement, or some sets only need a couple of sessions before we deem them "gig-ready". So why not come along, even if to just see how the process works and see some Work In Progress sets!

Here's an example of a LUCI member performing a set, which was workshopped in standup meetings before being selected for a gig! You can watch this set, along with all of our Gigs and performances from the last few years on our YouTube Channel!

Improv

Another LUCI gig staple is Improvised Comedy! This involves a number of "improvvers" coming together to create a truly spontaneous scene of comedy, using audience suggestions and the rules of an improv game to guide them! We have a large set of tried and tested improv games which we use in gigs, and we practise these every Friday in BNSR20, 6-8 PM. However, the main focus of these meetings is just to chill and have fun doing comedy, so there's no pressure to perform (LUCI never pressures anyone into performing, ever) and you can join in whenever you feel comfortable!

Want to get a better grasp on what Improv is? Here's a whole gig of Improv we did last year!

Gigs

Our regular gigs are the highlight of our society. Gigs are regular LUCI events where we show off what we do to an audience, either to students on campus or to the general public in our termly in-town gig. If you're interested in Comedy, want to see what we do, or are just looking for a good time, come along to a gig! We advertise them with plenty of warning on our Social Media, as well as with posters around campus. Bring your friends!

Generally, our gigs last around 1:30 - 2 hours, with a 10-15 minute break in the middle. Our most common location is County Bar, which is easily accessible on campus and has a bar with a good selection of drinks!

Sketches

Each term LUCI puts on a Sketch Show. This involves a bunch of member-written sketches, intertwined with a carefully scripted narrative that aims to leave the audience in tears! We audition for our sketch show at the start of each term, and we are very accommodating for amateurs! Generally, everyone who auditions is given a role, and being part of a sketch show is a great way to gain acting experience!

These shows need scripts, however, and we help our members write sketches in our weekly Sketch Meetings (Location and Time TBC), where, similar to Standup Meetings, members can bring sketches forward to be shared and reviewed! Whilst sketches are mainly written for our sketch shows, we do occasionally highlight some sketches that maybe didn't make the cut in our gigs!

Podcasts

LUCI has two main podcasts which we record on a weekly basis:

  • Talk Of The Devil is a news-focused show where contestants are asked questions on events in the news or strange stories that the host has found, occasionally with a theme! TotD is great fun to take part in, and we recruit members for the recordings each week in our General Meeting! We use a revolving host system too, so you could host TotD sometime!
  • The Improv Hour involves a group of people playing a number of audio-focused improv games for fun! Recordings of the Improv Hour are usually done in the same session as TotD.
  • <Your Podcast Idea Here!> LUCI are currently looking to expand the range of podcasts we do, so if you have an idea for a new show, let us know!
