Lancaster University Fencing Club 🌹

[Lancaster's Roses Win 2025]

We welcome fencers of all abilities!
Regardless of whether you are experienced or entirely new to the sport, if you are interested, come and pay us a visit!

Training and Matches

We Train in the Sports Centre on Mondays 20:00-22:00, Thursdays 18:00-20:00, and Sundays 15:30-18:00.
We have access to up to six pistes running simultaneously per session. As a result, there is ample oppurtunity for fencers to try out each weapon, regardless of prior ability.

Our membership fees include kit hire and coaching. We offer kit hiring services for everything from bodywires to a full set of whites! There is no expectation for fencers to have any kit prior to joining.
We currently have four teams in the BUCS Leagues (the inter-university league) - Mixed First Team, Mixed Second Team, Women's First Team, and Womens Second team. So, whether you want to fence competitively or for recreation, we will happily welcome you!

Coaching at Lancaster University Fencing club is held in high regard. For instance, our Foil and Epee coach is Mike Thornton, a Cat B FIE Referee (2012 Olympic fencing referee). As a results, Our Mixed First Team is currently in the Premier league and our Women's First Team placed in the top of their respective league in the 24/25 season.

We run two ranked home competitions with 80-120 fencers attending every year: The Lancaster Winter and Spring Open. Furthermore, our competitive fencers get to represent Lancaster at Roses; the largest inter-university competition in Europe.

Socials

We organise socials every Wednesday for the whole club. They range from escape rooms, to house parties, bowling, board game nights or three-legged pub crawls. We have a strong sense of community which is reflected in the comfortable atmosphere as well as turnout of our socials!

Additionally, we have annual events such as our club Christmas dinner or the Roses afterparty where the entire club including alumni and coaches come together.

Novice course

We run a Novice course during the first academic term on Saturdays from 12:00-14:00 in the Sports Centre. This course is intended for complete beginners who are interested in joining the club, but have little or no experience in the sport. In this course, we go over the fundementals of foot-work, blade-work, and give an introduction to all three weapons.
If you are looking to join the fencing club as a novice (a person who has not fenced before or a person who has very little fencing experience), you must first complete the novice course. This ensure that every club member has at least a basic understanding of the sport. But do not worry, we also offer casual novice fencing sessions throughout terms two and three! This allows novices who may have been unable to complete the novice course to have some fun on piste in a casual session. These sessions are run by exec members.
