Description

LANCASTER UNIVERSITY CONSERVATIVE SOCIETY

2024-25 Membership Fee: £5.00

About us

Lancaster University Conservative Society, more commonly known as ‘LUCS’, is an active student political society on the Lancaster campus. Our mission is to promote the values and policies of conservatism at Lancaster University. LUCS equally serves as a forum for discussion and debate, as well as a social scene for like-minded students.

Our society activities can be divided into three categories: debate, activism, and socials

Debate

Every week we host a wide range of exciting and intellectually stimulating debates on a vast array of political issues, both old and new. LUCS takes pride in our broad-church nature, welcoming students of views from across the political spectrum. We encourage all our members to express their views, giving everyone a chance to articulate their thoughts and ask pertinent questions. Our meetings take place every Wednesday during term time at 6PM in Elizabeth Livingston Lecture Theatre.

LUCS also seeks to provide wide-ranging opportunities to hear from leading lights of the political right by welcoming high-profile guest speakers.

Furthermore, we collaborate with other student political societies to organise regular ‘Question Time’ events where we can truly engage in the battle of ideas against the other parties.

Activism

LUCS is also a campaigning organisation, and we actively encourage our members to get involved in grassroots activism. We are proud of the values of conseravtism, and proud of putting them into practice. We work hard to get Conservative candidates elected by supporting election campaigns across Lancashire and the wider North West England region. In recent years, LUCS has supported Conservative candidates in City Council, County Council, and General Elections.

LUCS organises campaigning and canvassing training, and boasts several experienced campaigners amongst our ranks to help you out on the doorstep.

Moreover, our members have regularly stood in local elections across the country. At the 2023 Local elections, many LUCS members were Conservative Party candidates in wards across the country. Lancaster University falls within its own ward in Lancaster City Council, thus it is usually our members who rise to the challenge of contesting this seat.

LUCS also endeavours to connect our members with fellow conservatives across the UK. We arrange trips to events such as the Conservative Party Conference, giving our members the exciting networking opportunities.

Media opportunities are often presented to LUCS members from media outlets from a university to national level, giving them a platform to discuss their views.

Not all of our activism is political. LUCS is also committed to supporting charitable causes, at both a local and national level. We organise an annual collection for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and support a range of charities in their community endeavours.

Socials

As well as being a political society, LUCS is also an active social scene, with socials every week organised by our Social Secretary! Our socials are incredibly diverse, so there’s something for everyone.

Some of our social events have included:

  • Lancaster and Constituency Association Patrons’ Dinner
  • P&P
  • Christmas meal
  • Cards night
  • Pub quizzes
  • Karaoke (‘Tory-oke’!)
  • Film club
  • Tory Tandoori
  • Cross-party football cup
  • Bar sports evening

What’s more, after all of our weekly meetings LUCS heads for a pint at County Bar (RIP Grad Bar). Most weeks, this usually leads to a night out at the Sugarhouse too!
