On Tuesday February 19, Vice-President (Campaigns & Communications) Islay hosted the first ever Social Media Conference at Lancaster University, which was one of her main manifesto pledges when she campaigned for her Full-Time Officer position.

The event, which took place over an evening, hosted sessions from a range of guest speakers; from how to use Instagram to your advantage, using social media to increase engagement for societies, whether social media is ruining our lives, keeping up with social media, what to do whilst at university to make yourself more employable in a social media role, the future of social media and more.

Social media is a tool that many of of us use regularly, whether that be for checking up on what our friends had for lunch, communicating with other students about your society’s events or using LinkedIn to connect with potential employers.

Islay said, “A HUGE thank you to everyone who came and contributed to our first ever Social Media Conference! It was so interesting to hear from such a range of speakers, and to not just hear about the positives of social media, but also to hear from David Ellis about whether social media is ruining our lives. I hope the students that attended sessions are now inspired to go out and put the tips that they’ve learned in to practice and up their social media game!”

Julia, from the Advertising Society said that there were an “Incredibly engaging and insightful list of events delving into topics ranging from hacking Instagram algorithms to creating your own online brand, and understanding the impact of technology on our everyday lives. Thank you to Islay for the amazing opportunity to meet so many speakers and hear their individual perspective on this broad range of topics and issues”

Ellie, from the Marketing Society said "It was so lovely to hear from such a wide range of speakers on everything from LinkedIn and Societies to brand building Social Media in 2019. It was wonderful to see so many students asking such engaging questions as well. A big thank you to all who came and to the speakers for delivering such great talks!"
