During the festive Christmas Markets, your Full-Time Officers, led by Josh, Your VP Welfare, ran a 'craftivist' project to demand better from the University and the Government on cost of living, housing, and education for students this winter.
You wrote over three hundred letters with your Christmas wishes to the Vice-Chancellor and Prime Minister, and we collated them together.
"Dear Vice Chancellor,
All we want for Christmas is….
- To be able to enjoy University without worrying about when the next loan comes in.
- A Rent freeze for the most vulnerable students More accessible cost of living support with less barriers.
- Our Wednesday afternoons back!!
- Lectures and seminars to be at reasonable and consistent times so we can maintain routines and part time work.
- More buses at peak times.
- A smaller Greggs queue <3 with more cheap food options on campus.
From Lancaster University Students' Union"
"Dear Prime Minister,
All we want for Christmas is…
- Higher maintenance loans which rise with actual inflation.
- More housing rights for students with accountability for landlords.
- International students to be treated with respect by your government.
- For you to take Cost of Living for students seriously.
From Lancaster University Students' Union"
This project aim is to support you in making those with power understand that students are struggling and what is in place, is not good enough.
Josh your Vice-President Welfare added "students are struggling… maintenance loans that don't rise with actual inflation, volatile timetables that mean students are staying on campus till the evening and can't secure part time work, and institutions that fundamentally don't respect them as consumers. We deserve better and we will continue fighting to build a supportive, affordable, and vibrant campus experience for us all."
