Bailrigg FM will continue to broadcast on the airwaves after a decision by the Lancaster University Students’ Union Trustee Board to maintain its FM licence.

Earlier this year the decision was taken to close down Bailrigg’s FM broadcast and move the station to an online-only model.

But feedback from numerous Bailrigg FM members past and present was that broadcasting on FM was crucial to the experience of being part of the station and provided important experience for those planning a career in broadcasting.

The union’s trustee board listened to this feedback and decided to reverse the decision – meaning that Bailrigg will continue to broadcast on the 87.7 FM frequency on campus.

Bailrigg FM’s executive has renewed its commitment to ensuring that broadcasting is run to professional standards as part of an agreement between the union and the station.

The union is pleased to support Bailrigg FM’s executive in this work, and looks forward to seeing the station develop and improve.

Following the Trustee Board’s decision, Bailrigg’s new executive team has issued a statement:

“We are elated to announce that Bailrigg will keep its FM licence.

“We would like to thank everyone who has voiced their disapproval with the initial decision over the last few months. The voices of many students, alumni, industry professionals and others have helped keep us on the airwaves. In particular, we would like to thank last year’s Vice-President (Campaigns & Communications) Islay Grant for her dedicated efforts on the station’s behalf. We are grateful to all who helped.

“This means a lot to our members. Bailrigg FM will now continue to be a place where hobbyists and industry hopefuls alike can gain real experience being part of a radio station, be it as a presenter, producer, technician, or anything else. This is so important to our members, both current and future, and was a driving force behind pushing back against the licencing decision.

“For both listeners and members, we are committed to improving the station. We aim to build on what we have now and strive for excellence as a platform for students, provided by students. We have lots of exciting plans for the next academic year, so keep an eye on our social media accounts for information regarding our website, our plans for Welcome Week and a restructuring of our flagship shows.

“If you’re interested in becoming part of the Bailrigg FM team, or even just dipping your toe into the world of radio, message our Facebook page or email station.manager@bailriggfm.co.uk. We welcome students of all years and levels of experience.

“We will continue to broadcast on our 87.7 FM frequency, which is accessible all over campus, and Radioplayer will remain as our recommended way to listen.”
