One of my key manifestos aims this year was to expand the training available for our student leaders. I’m really pleased to share that the week before welcome week, we delivered a brand-new programme for sports executives, running from Monday to Thursday, which included sessions on mental health, sustainability, inclusivity, and careers.

This marks an important step forward in recognising the huge role that student leaders play at Lancaster. Whether in sports clubs, societies, or JCRs, student leaders aren’t just organising activities – they’re shaping the student experience, supporting friends, and building inclusive communities.

By broadening the training we offer, we’re making sure they have the skills, awareness, and confidence to do this in the best possible way.
Mental health training equips leaders to better support teammates and members, but also how to look after themselves. Being trained on how to be sustainable ensures activities are run responsibly and with future impact in mind. Inclusivity training helps to continue to create spaces where everyone feels welcome and able to participate, with a specific focus on trans and neurodivergent inclusion. And careers training means students can take the skills they’ve built in leadership roles and translate them into opportunities after Lancaster.

The feedback so far has been positive, and we’re looking forward to rolling out similar training for society leaders in the coming weeks. This is just the start of building a stronger foundation of support for all student leaders, and I’m proud to see one of my manifesto aims coming to life in such a meaningful way.
