Thousands of people all over the country get their year off to a healthy start by taking part in Dry January – a national campaign encouraging people to take a break from alcohol following the festive season.

Lancaster student Domenica Giorgianni is taking part in Dry January for the second time, and is really feeling the benefits.

She said: “It is my second Dry January. After having embraced the UK drinking culture so well, last year I wanted to see whether I could last a whole month without drinking. And yes, I managed to do it, I was pretty proud.

“This year I’d say I’m doing well. I feel less tired, less bloated and I don’t have to be scared of waking up feeling hungover.

“l have been at several celebrations where almost everyone was having something alcoholic to drink. I’m not going to say it was easy to say I was going to have ‘just water’ but I’ve been good and managed to resist all temptations.

“It seems kind of pointless to hear someone saying ‘I’m doing Dry January’ when they only occasionally drink. However, I’d definitely recommend to anyone who drinks more than just occasionally. Your liver and wallet will be thankful!

As well as benefiting her health and finances, Dominica’s Dry January is raising money for Cancer Research.
