For years, students (myself included) have campaigned for the provision of free period products on campus. In many instances, students and University allies have taken it upon themselves to provide pads and tampons in Colleges and academic departments.

In my role as Wellbeing Officer, I have continued the work of generations of student campaigners to advocate for the provision of free period products across campus. Earlier in the year, I presented a proposal to the University. The Students’ Union’s proposal outlined current provision and proposed a number of suitable central locations across campus. It also covered the level of supply required to eradicate period poverty on campus.

I have personally visited far, far too many toilets in every building on campus to find the best possible places for pads. We’re aiming to include everyone who menstruates and have proposed a mix of gendered and non-gendered spaces.

We are very excited to say that the University have now taken our proposal and are trying to make it a reality! We are supporting the University in this work, to ensure provision remains wide-spread, accessible, ethical, and inclusive.

All being well, period products should be available for free across campus next academic year.

We’ll keep you updated!
