LUSU 2024 Election Results

Monday 11-03-2024 - 10:43

Last week, it was elections time. 4467 of you voted in our 2024 Students’ Union Elections: that’s 27% of the total student population! As a result, we will plant 223 trees on-campus next year.

After voting closed at 6pm on Thursday 7th March, we began to count up and verify the results of the elections for the four Full-Time Officer and three Liberation & Campaigns Officer positions. We worked hard to ensure that all our elections were fair and results were valid, before winners are announced at 9:30pm on Friday 8th March. Unfortunately, we were not ready to confidently announce the result for International Students’ Officer. The results for this position will be announced as soon as possible.

If you’d rather relive the live experience, you can watch LA1TV’s stream of the Results event here:

The following candidates were successfully elected:

President 2024/25: Cerys Evans

Activities Officer 2024/25: Jack Watson

Education Officer 2024/25: Harrison Stewart

Wellbeing Officer 2024/25: Ella Smith

Students with Disabilities Officer 2024/25: Em & Charley

Women+ Students’ Officer 2024/25: Millie Ni-Elle Ashton

You can view the raw count sheets here.

We would like to thank all our amazing candidates this election season. We asked that you all gave it a go and made the most of the experience - we were so proud to see you all trying new things, pushing yourselves outside of your comfort zones, and throwing yourselves into the experience. A big thank you goes to: Matthew, George, Em & Charley, Sky, Nathan, Ifaz, Joshua, Huseyn, Kyle, Shlok, Ella, Cerys, Thomas, Joe, Tom, Owen, Khanak, Jack, Harrison, Sara, Pavan, and Will.

We would also like to acknowledge the work of our wonderful student media: LA1TV, BailriggFM, and SCAN.

You can also find live coverage of Candidate Questions and the Results event. We would like to thank Josie, Rowan, Devyn, Aaron, Joshua, Ella, Riley and everyone else involved in delivering this year’s stellar elections coverage.

You can catch-up on SCAN’s elections coverage on their website. Alongside interviews of a large number of candidates, you can also read summaries of candidates’ manifestos and coverage of Candidate Questions. A huge thank you to Caitlyn, Efe, and the rest of the SCAN team for their endeavour and energy in report on this year’s elections.

We would like to thank Politics Society for their collaboration on the Candidate Questions event on Monday 4th March. Bawan, Matt, Anya, and Cormac - your professionalism and openness were a huge part of the success of the event, we look forward to working with you in the future.

Finally, we would like to thank Sam, Santi & Josh for their support and enthusiasm throughout the elections period. We would also like to thank the LUSU Shop Team for feeding our candidates, the LUSU Events Team for their support with Candidate Questions & Results, and The Sugarhouse Team for ensuring our candidates and their friends could celebrate the end of elections in-style.

If you have any questions about our elections and how they are run, please email lancastersuelections@lancaster.ac.uk.

For those with a burning interest in elections, we will try and provide some more behind-the-scenes insights into how the elections are run. For now:

• You can read candidates’ manifestos here: FTO Manifestos and LCO Manifestos 2024.

• You can read all the questions pre-submitted to Candidate Questions here.

Want to get involved? We are also looking for some help:

• If you are an avid historian, we need your help! We think this year’s elections may be our best turnout ever, but our elections archive isn’t as strong as it should be. We need some help to pull together information about our elections across LUSU’s history. Email lancastersuelections@lancaster.ac.uk if you are interested in getting involved.

• For next year, we are aiming to run plastic-free elections. We suspect our elections have a minimal carbon footprint already, but we want to know for certain. If you are interested in helping us deliver the nation’s first confidently plastic-free, and carbon-positive elections please email lancastersuelections@lancaster.ac.uk.
