But this journey isn’t just about what these students bring with them; it’s also about what they leave behind. Moving away from home to pursue higher education is a significant step. For many, it means leaving behind their family, familiar surroundings, and cultural comforts to embrace the unknown. Alongside the excitement of new opportunities, international students face challenges such as homesickness, adapting to new academic systems, and navigating university services in a different country.
Understanding these experiences, your International Students’ Forum and Students’ Union created the International Students’ Fair—a dedicated event designed to welcome and support our international students. This initiative was born from a singular vision: to make Lancaster feel like home—a home far from home.
A Vibrant Fair Tailored for International Students
The International Freshers’ Fair was meticulously designed to cater to the diverse needs of our international students, ensuring they felt supported, integrated, and celebrated. The event featured a wide array of resources and opportunities, including:
• Wellbeing Services to support mental health and adjustment to life at university.
• Employment and Recruitment Services to provide guidance on finding part-time work and building professional skills.
• Money Services to assist with budgeting and financial advice.
• Cultural, Faith, and Academic Societies to help students find communities that align with their interests and identities.
Beyond the practical resources, the fair was a lively celebration of culture. Performances representing different traditions brought the stage to life, showcasing the diversity that makes Lancaster unique. And to set the perfect tone for the day, a DJ added an energetic, welcoming atmosphere that resonated with everyone present.
Building a Community, Together
The International Students’ Fair was more than just an event—it was a statement of inclusion, belonging, and community. It demonstrated that Lancaster University is not just a place to study; it’s a place to grow, connect, and thrive.
For every international student who walked through the doors of the fair, we hope the message was clear: You belong here. No matter where you’re from or how far you’ve travelled, Lancaster University and your Students’ Union are here to ensure you feel supported, valued, and at home.
As we look ahead, we remain committed to fostering a community where diversity is celebrated, and every student feels they are part of something special. Welcome to Lancaster—a home far from home.
