The legendary Lancaster rock group will be following in the footsteps of iconic bands such as Queen, AC/DC, U2, Dire Straits, Black Sabbath and Tina Turner, who all played Lancaster’s Great Hall. The Massive Wagons gigs will go down in history, because they are being recorded for a new live album.
The event, on September 19th and 20th, is being run by LUSU in partnership with Lancaster University. Tickets go on sale on the Massive Wagons website - officially on Friday, June 6.
Announcing the shows on their website Massive Wagons said: “Held in Lancaster's legendary Great Hall on September 19th and 20th, we will gather to pay homage and to follow in the footsteps of many distinguished acts who graced this stage over the years. Queen, AC/DC, Tina Turner!!! You name it, they passed through here on their way to mega-stardom."
“This is more than a gig. It’s a full-circle moment. A love letter to the golden era of rock 'n' roll and a bold new chapter for a venue steeped in history.”
Lead singer Baz said: “These shows are a huge deal for us. It's the ultimate hometown gig, and we haven't played locally for a very long time. The history of live music at Lancaster University’s Great Hall is just insane! And now, after it felt silent around 40 years ago, the Wagons are heading back for two nights of what we do best; to absolutely rock the place! It's an honour to get the green light for this, and we have an incredible team in place including Barry Lucas, the original promoter, all super excited to bring music back to the Great Hall! As well as these two shows, we will be recording a live album over both nights, something we have wanted to do for a long time, and sometimes you just have to wait for the right moment, and the stars align. It's gonna be the biggest thing we've done, and I hope it shines a light on Lancaster, the university, the amazing music scene, and some incredible people in the industry, and I truly hope the two shows bring a lot of joy to everyone involved.”
Andrew Barker, Library Director at Lancaster University, “We have worked hard behind the scenes to bring live rock music back to the Great Hall in recent years, and now thanks to the work of LUSU and the vision of Massive Wagons, we are doing that with an explosive set of homecoming gigs. We knew we had to begin with something huge, and the Massive Wagons weekender is going to bring an excitement back to the Great Hall which has been unknown for 40 years – the icing on the cake is that Barry Lucas is at the heart of the event which continues a tradition that goes back to when he put The Who on in 1969”
LUSU CEO Misbah Ashraf said: “We are delighted to be involved in bringing rock back to Lancaster campus with the shows by Massive Wagons. It’s going to be a great weekend, and we hope many of our students will be able to enjoy the gigs and the atmosphere this band creates.”
To help the festivities, Massive Wagons own IPA will be on sale behind the bar, along with a range of food.
