It’s National Student Volunteering Week!
To celebrate we’ll be highlighting some of the wonderful work of our student volunteers here at the students’ union by featuring them in articles on our website over the course of the week. To begin this we thought we’d give you a broad view of some of the key ways in which you can volunteer through your union.
Check out our Volunteer Facebook group to find out more about new opportunities as we receive them or read more about the different types of opportunities we offer below!
On and off campus there are charities and groups which are making incredible changes to the community in which we live. They need people who care, people who can support them, people who have the drive and ability to make change, and contribute to making Lancaster an amazing place to study and live. Whether you want to volunteer from home, on campus or off campus; with children, animals, the elderly or people in need, we’ll have a role to suit you. No matter what your previous experience, you can be the change.
Each year hundreds of students make a difference to the lives of local young people through our schools volunteering; whilst building their own skills and experience for the future as well. These opportunities provide invaluable experience for students looking to work with children, including those looking to pursue a career in teaching or those looking to give back to the local community. We have something for everyone, whether you just want to volunteer for a day on campus or would like to commit to a regular placement in a local school.
As a collaborative initiative of Lancaster University and Lancaster University Students’ Union, Green Lancaster creates environmental change on campus by encouraging sustainable behaviours and providing opportunities to make positive environmental choices. Whether you have a love for food and gardening, recycling, or cycling, there are many ways to get involved with Green Lancaster and sustainability on campus.
Find out more here and check out Green Lancaster's Facebook, Twitter & Instagram to follow what they're working on!
Maybe you’re already volunteering with the students’ union and you hadn’t even realised! Students who are on the executive committees for your JCRs, clubs & societies volunteer their time to help organise the events which help to make your university experiences even better. Your Academic Reps function in a similar way, volunteering their time to attend meetings and provide feedback to help support the union as it works to support your academic interests.
