Renaming Lancaster SU’s Nightclub Preferenda Results

Between the 9th and 18th of June, students were asked to vote on their preferred name choice for Lancaster SU’s nightclub
The possible name choices included La Lune, Sugarhouse, Treehouse, 1485, The Red Rose, The Alex, Big Blue House, Duckhouse, The Mousetrap and Club Phoenix. Following the preferenda with over 2000 student voters taking part, students have decided that our nightclub is to remain named Sugarhouse.

Q: So, what happens next?
A: Lancaster SU’s Nightclub will remain named as Sugarhouse, but the students’ union plans to work with others to highlight Lancaster’s colonial history and are committed to investing and implementing educational programmes to all students and staff.
Q: Why was there a preferenda in the first place?
A: The students’ union Executive Committee on the 16th of March, unanimously voted to rename the Sugarhouse. This follows the submission of the Renaming Sugarhouse Policy paper, brought forward by your Racial and Ethnic Minorities Students’ Officer. Students were then invited to submit potential new names to the SU. Students, on the 29th of April, then passed a motion which mandated your students’ union to take these name choices to a student jury for them to then decide on 9 candidate names, alongside Sugarhouse to take to an all-student preferenda.
Q: Will Sugarhouse stay named the Sugarhouse forever?
A: That is up to you, the students who make up the SU. Students have the ongoing capability to bring about change at the SU by submitting ideas or petitions to lancastersu.co.uk/ideas and getting your fellow members to vote and engage with your submission.
