Lancaster and York come together to support student mental health as part of the Roses Unlocked event

It's no secret that the pandemic has had an immeasurable impact on our mental health. Students, in particular, have suffered immensely. According to mental health charity Mind, people aged 18–24 reported worse mental health and wellbeing during lockdown than any other age group.

Half (51%) said their mental health was poor, and three quarters (74%) have said that their mental health got worse during the pandemic. University students followed a similar pattern; nearly three quarters (73%) of students said that their mental health declined during lockdown.

So this year, as well as competing against York physically and virtually, there’ll be an opportunity to donate and compete with York to raise the most money, in aid in mental health charity Lancashire Mind.

The Lancashire arm of the national charity, Mind, focuses on improving mental health and wellbeing in the local area. Likewise, York will be providing the opportunity for students to donate to York Mind.

Anything you can do to show your support from wearing red to cheering on our athletes virtually and donating to our local community will have a huge impact.

VP Sport Paul McCarthy said: “After the effect the last year of inactivity and isolation has had on student mental health, to be able to use the Roses Unlocked event to help raise money for such an important cause is an incredible opportunity. Anything given by students will be indefinitely appreciated, and I can’t wait for us to show our Lancaster community spirit throughout this weekend.

We’ve beaten York in the pool, we’ve beaten York on the pitch, we’ve consistently beaten York in the university league tables – now it’s time for us to beat York at this!"
