This term has been packed with activity from student groups. From Chinese New Year to Holi here are a few of the highlights.

CSSA - Chinese New Year

In February the CSSA hosted a Chinese New Year Celebration. This consisted of singing and dance performances from students preformed in front of an audience of 500 students in The Great Hall.

Event organiser, Norah Su said, ‘Chinese New Year is the day all of our family members gather together and celebrate. But we are in the UK, we could not see much of this important festival, this show has comforted me and made me feel less homesick. As for the show, the highlight is definitely 'a cappella'.’

 

Ballroom Dancing Society

Ballroom Dancing have had a very busy term, hosting Annual Ballroom Strictly Charity Showcase which featured numerous other societies including: LU Theatre Group, LUDanS, Belly Dancing, ULMS, LA1 TV and raised over £2000 for charity. As well have entering competitions and holding medals tests with members.

 

Real Ale and Cider Society

Real Ale and Cider Society held a trip to the famous Runaway Brewery in Manchester this term and experienced an intricate tour of the brewery and dabbled in a selection of their home brews!

 

U Social Venture

Social Venture are a relatively new group who none the less have achieved a great deal since their inception last year. They describe themselves as ‘a student-run community that offers support and opportunities to those wishing to tackle a social or environmental problem with innovative solutions.’ Some of their projects this term have included, Student Volunteering Fair and Restyle.

 

PMers Maze Challenge

This aMAZEing spectacle took place in the huge LICA spaces over an entire weekend. The project utilised over 1000 cardboard boxes! The end result was endearing, ominous and a truly unique student-led event!

Defying Dementia

The group have held a number of events this term to raise money for the cause, ranging from a Valentines’ Day rose delivery service and speed dating night to selling pancakes and pancake mix for Pancake Day. They’re ending the term with a ‘Charity Night Out’ at Ye Olde John O’Gaunt pub in town, featuring campus acts such as Marco Tamini, Jonathan Parks and Ruby Beach.

 

Freefall Society

Freefall society member James Squibb saw particular success this term, progressing in his RAPS/static-line course at Black Knight Parachute Centre. This course will lead to jumps without plane assissed parachute deployment, and so James has moved one step closer towards getting his “A” skydiving license.

 

LUTG – Lancaster University Theatre Group

This term LUTG have presented four shows, all fully student led:

• Blither Spirit, by Noel Coward
• 1984, by George Orwell
• The Glass House, an original piece by Liv Burton (Lancaster student)
• Incognito, by Nick Payne

Performances were held both on and off campus, desplaying their talent to the wider Lancaster community. The proceeds from ‘Incognito’ went towards Neuro Dropin, Lancaster, a charity which provides a welcoming space for those affected by a neurological condition. The production's subject matter struck a chord with the audience evoking strong emotions and was very well received.

LUDans

LUDans held their annual show, this year titled Around the World and enterd national compertitions coming first in Steet and Advanced Ballet.

 

Culture Society - Global Village

This Village of vibrant culture featured cuisine from all corners of the globe and included contributions from many different societies including:

Singapore, Lithuanian, Taiwanese, Latin America, Kazakstan, Romanian, Indian, Bulgarian and Welsh

 

Indian Society

This year the Indian Society brought RANG to Lancaster. The Hindi word Rang translates to Colour. This widely celebrated Indian festival is called HOLI and is celebrated to welcome the harvest season, cherish relationships and embrace new beginnings. The celebration includes a massive colour and water fight and it usually falls in the month of March.

Up North Arts

This term Up North Arts hosted an exhibition at the Story which saw well over 300 people attend.
