Lancaster University and your students’ union are working together to ensure that campus is well lit and you feel safe when walking around especially during the night. Lancaster ranked as one of the top five safest Universities in the UK by timeshighereducation.com.
We want students and the Lancaster community to feel safer walking at night and we believe a key element is ensuring campus is well lit.
Due to daylight savings, it gets darker earlier – this means more students have to walk back from their later classes in the dark or when you are returning home from a night out.
Amy Merchant (VP Welfare said): “It was fantastic to be involved in the walk and to play an active part in making campus a safer space for our staff and student communities. It's so important to be proactive with our actions, and ensure that we are providing and maintaining a campus that everyone is safe to live and work in.”
The University have invested significant amounts of money over the years in improving campus such as lighting, improved pathways, signage etc.
Professor Wendy Robinson said: “I am new to Lancaster this term – and was both reassured and pleased to observe the care and attention given by the whole team to checking the lighting and feel of campus for all our students and staff. We are also very open to suggestions for further improvement”.
The group conducted an audit of campus to ensure there were no dark spots on campus. Reported lamp posts that were not working and will be recommending to the university accommodation provider areas where lighting can be improved.
Paul Morris (Director of Capital Development & Estate Operations said: “The Team at Lancaster are focussed on ensuring the campus environment provided by Maintenance, Security and Gounds Management is maintained to a quality standard for all, to feel safe in their living, working and recreational activity 24/7”.
The group will do another walk which includes Sports facilities and Health Innovation Campus.
We hope this provides all students and the community with re-assurance that we are committed to improving safety on campus.
