What We Said to the OfS About Consumer Protections

Thursday 16-07-2026 - 12:05

We’ve been responding to lots of consultations recently to make sure your interests are protected and your views are heard.
In June, Kate (LUSU President 26/27) and Rory (LUSU President 25/26) provided a response to the Office for Students’ proposed new approach to consumer and student protection.

In our response we encouraged the OfS to take firm action against disreputable providers and agents. We also emphasised the need to regulate the non-academic aspects of students’ experience that form an integral part of marketing materials for many institutions. We also encouraged the OfS to consider the current and future implications of staff redundancies on providers’ ability to deliver what is has sold to applicants.

Kate BracewellKate Bracewell, LUSU President:

“For a lot of students, this is their first time living away from home and a lot of experiences surrounding HE are new to them. It’s important to protect their consumer rights as young people and students, ensuring that university is a place where they can learn and experience life alongside their studies without worry.”
