We ask Lancaster University to join other UK universities in offering scholarships or financial support to asylum seekers or refugees residing in Lancaster who wish to pursue their education and complete a degree at the university.

Many refugees arrive in the UK willing to continue their education but lack the financial means to do so, some of whom live in Lancaster. In England, refugees and asylum seekers cannot access student finance, putting university education out of reach for many. Providing the financial means to cover study and maintenance costs would lessen the burden on refugees seeking further education in the UK.

Allowing refugees in Lancaster to continue their education lessens the great disruption caused by fleeing violence and persecution at home. It provides a solid basis upon which to develop skills and build a new life. Furthermore, it will allow refugees to bring their academic passion and skills to contribute to the life of Lancaster University and wider society and make a huge positive change to the lives of individual refugees

Lancaster University should embrace people from all backgrounds and promote their education. Over 40 UK universities have provided scholarships, fee waivers or bursaries for asylum seekers. It is time for Lancaster University to do the same.
