Why This Matters

Reindeer are meant to thrive in their natural habitat, not to be used as festive props for human amusement. Every Christmas season, live reindeer are transported over long distances, confined to unnatural, noisy environments, and exposed to stress that compromises their well-being. This practice is neither ethical nor necessary and runs counter to the compassionate, forward-thinking values we uphold as a university.

What We’re Demanding

1. Immediate Action from the Student Union:
   • Commit to ending the use of live reindeer and other animals at all university-sponsored events, including Christmas celebrations.
   • Release an official statement confirming this commitment, showcasing the university's stance on animal welfare and ethical practices.
2. Collaboration and Outreach:
   • Encourage all colleges within the university, local community and affiliated organizations, Includeing but not limited to those in the local council and BID,  to adopt the same stance by not funding such events and promoting animal-free events.
   • Partner with local businesses and community groups to advocate for compassionate alternatives to live-animal displays.

Why This Change Is Essential

• Animal Welfare: Transporting reindeer from their homes in places such as national parks in Scotland to busy, unnatural environments like campus  or other  event venues exposes them to extreme stress and potential illness. These conditions prevent the reindeer from engaging in natural behaviours and compromise their health.
• Ethical Responsibility: The university has a reputation for embracing progressive, ethical practices. Ending the use of live reindeer is a natural extension of Lancaster’s commitment to sustainability and compassion.
• Growing Momentum: Across the UK, 153 annual events have already committed to animal-free celebrations. By making this change, Lancaster University can align itself with a growing movement that prioritizes humane treatment and modern, responsible celebrations.
